My family always had a lot of ‘sayings’ when I was growing up and it’s funny how they’ve stuck with me all my life. My dad, especially, had words of wisdom to share and they were usually meant to boost my confidence as I’ve always been a little bit shy and quiet in new situations. Some of my favorites were: “You decide how things are going to go today, Pumpkin (yes, my dad calls me Pumpkin), are you going to be The Ball or are you going to be The Bat?”; which was my dads way of helping me learn to take charge of any situation and not let my shyness get in the way, and the classic “Confidence is Key”.
I never realized how important those confidence-building sayings were until I got a little older and had to push myself out of my comfort zone in order to have the life I wanted. As a basically shy person who is now faced with constantly meeting new people and traveling to events around the country, I had to find ways to keep my confidence up. Looking back, I’ve found that nearly every single amazing thing that has happened to me has been because I was strong enough and brave enough to face new situations head-on and not shy away from them. All of my strength and bravery in the face of new situations is truly rooted in self-confidence.
And where does that self-confidence come from? Sometimes complex things, like knowing that I’ve got the experience and qualifications for a particular job or even times when my ‘life experience’ enables me to share my stories that can help others. I’ve also found that when I’m feeling comfortable in what I’m wearing, I’ve got one less thing to worry about and I can relax about my appearance and put my energy in to pushing myself out of my comfort zone in other ways.
