My weekend trip to Portland was a blur of fantastic food, coffee, shopping at Forever 21 (no sales tax in Oregon!) and attending a family friend’s high school graduation. My mom and I stayed at the Hilton, right in the center of downtown Portland, which was the perfect spot to explore all that the city has to offer. A highlight of my trip was our trek to Blue Star Donuts. We tried Saturday morning but the line was down the block so we went back early Sunday and managed to make it through the line and it was well worth it.
Blue Star makes thick, brioche-style donuts, which range from classics, like a twist on the Portland-famous bacon-maple bar, to fried chicken, cherry-maple fritters, and a crème brulee confection that comes with a shot of Cointreau poking out of its top, which you squeeze into the custard… and have to be 21 to order. My mom’s favorite was the Mexican Hot Chocolate and mine was the classic glazed ‘old fashioned’ with the Matcha green tea coming in at a close second. Blue Star Donuts opens at 7am each morning and stays open until they run out of donuts – which apparently happens every single day!
