Once again, I had a blast at San Francisco’s Bay to Breakers, the oldest continuously run footrace in the world. I don’t know why I never participated in this event while I was living up there – now that I’m living in LA I look forward to this 7.1 mile race each year. In going over my shots from the race I had a very hard time finding ones without nude runners in them. Nudity was officially outlawed for this event two years ago but in true San Francisco form there were more nude participants than ever. I’ve carefully looked over these shots and everyone seems to be fully clothed…
My two favorite things about Bay to Breakers are the costumes and the community involvement. The most difficult part of the course is Hayes Street Hill and I love how all the neighbors get involved and keep the party going with music, dancing, cookies and lemonade stands and even a churro cart.
The 7.1 miles go by pretty fast because of all the great people-watching. The costumes are so much fun and everyone is friendly – like a great big party winding it’s way through this fantastic city.
That guy dressed as Coit Tower was one of my favorite costumes this year. After the race we went to Capp’s Corner, a family-style Italian restaurant that’s been around since 1963 and is a ‘must-visit’ place for me each time I’m in town. Their lasagne is the best…
I always have the best time up in San Francisco and especially on Bay to Breakers weekend. I’m already looking forward to next year and starting to think of some costume ideas to make it even more fun.
