Muted colors such as soft wine, off white, pale gray and tan are all in fashion this fall, and they provide a neat alternative to the season’s typical deep browns and reds. Add a daring edge to an otherwise subtle look by choosing bold and interesting prints, such as camo or tribal patterns, that feature these tones. Finish the look with a matching statement necklace or ring.

2. Oversized Cold-Weather Knits

Roomy knit items were popular on the runways this season. At Paris Fashion Week, we saw everything from calf-length sweaters to cozy knit pants. Calvin Klein’s fall runway show featured a number of interesting knit items in pretty fall colors, and Marc Jacobs also got in on the trend with cozy knit sets that are thick and warm enough to live in throughout the winter. This trend is perfect for those of us who love to cuddle under a blanket and enjoy a good book on a brisk fall day.

Fashions from the 1990s were one of the latest fashion trends this year, and plaid flannel, which has always been associated with the grunge movement of that decade, is now appearing on the runways with a high-fashion twist. To avoid looking like an extra in a Nirvana video, try pairing a long-sleeved plaid shirt with a chic skirt or a nice pair of trousers instead of more casual items such as jeans and a t-shirt.

Plaid patterns also work well with the preppy look. At Vera Wang, Salvatore Ferragamo and Tommy Hilfiger’s fall runway show, we saw some interesting plaid coats that are much more preppy than grungy.

The 1960s are also returning this year. Miniskirts, go-go boots, a-line dresses, helmet hats, kitschy prints and other glam looks have appeared in the fall collections of designers like Saint Laurent, Gucci and House of Holland. If the go-go look isn’t your thing, you’ll be happy to know that the longer skirts and flowing trousers of the 1940s are also currently in style.

5. Interesting and Unique Leather

Fashion experts agree that leather will remain popular through 2015. Going for leather items in unique and unexpected colors, such as pastels, and mixing them with feminine classics like pencil skirts and floral dresses is the key to looking fresh and feminine.
