Another day, another cup of Kona coffee! We’ve been exploring the little towns here on The Big Island and finding some great coffee. Today we visited Kona Joe and loved learning more about how they grow and prepare their coffee. Kona Joe is the world’s first trellised coffee plantation, which means they grow their coffee like fine wine.
Coffee experts around the world recognize that Kona, Hawaii has the ideal climate for nurturing coffee cherries. The volcanic mountains that comprise the island cool the moisture in the sea air to create afternoon cloud shade and light rain showers. The daily afternoon shade protects the delicate coffee cherries from the hot tropical sun. Shade promotes vegetative growth, while sunshine produces mature coffee fruit. This perfect balance of morning sunshine and afternoon showers is found only on a narrow stretch of the Big Island of Hawaii known as the “Kona Coffee Belt”.
The weather has been wonderful on this trip and after a chilly week in NYC it’s been so nice to just put on a cute sundress and sandals each day. Today’s dress is from Beyond Proper and I love the bright colors, lightweight fabric and big, dramatic bow that ties at the back of the neck (or it could be wrapped back around as a scarf) plus it can easily be dressed up or down.
Thanks so much for following along! xx
